Kathy Capra is the Director of Special Education at Harriet Tubman Charter School. In this role, she supports special education staff to promote a high bar of rigor and increase student access to grade level learning. She also works in partnership with the Director of Student Services to ensure that students’ IEP plans are written to ensure students receive the services they are entitled to and receive the highest quality of special education services, according to their individualized education program.

Kathy has over 26 years of experience in education, primarily as a middle school teacher. She taught for 4 years in Florida, 6th and 7th grade math, and 11 years in Oakland, CA, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math. The past 11 years have been at Harriet Tubman Charter School in the Special Education Department as a teacher, case manager, and now Director of Special Education Compliance. In the classroom, she taught math to grades 5 – 8 as well as intervention classes. She has a passion for helping students who struggle with math concepts, organization, or need help relating to their peers or teachers. She believes school is a place where students should feel empowered to learn and grow no matter where they are with their skills.
