Alexia Vasilopoulos
Director of Special Education, Harriet Tubman Charter School
Joined the Team in 2019

Alexia received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and French from Knox College, in Galesburg, IL, and a Master of Science in Special Education from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. Her formal work in education began in 2014, where she served as an AmeriCorps member for a summer Upward Bound program in Western Massachusetts. Inspired by the students she served, Alexia continued with another AmeriCorps program in Denver to teach math intervention after graduating from Knox College. It was there that Alexia saw the power of tailoring lessons to small groups and the power of a growth mindset. In 2016, Alexia joined Teach For America, and served as a Diverse Learner Teacher in Chicago. As a first year teacher, she participated in LEAP Innovations, an organization that implements personalized learning in selected schools, led professional developments on growth mindset to her colleagues, and taught theater/improv to middle school students. After the Corps, Alexia moved to Saint Louis, MO to become a Site Manager for Blueprint Schools Network in East St. Louis, IL. Overseeing the two middle schools in the district, she developed and coached new teachers in math, maintained positive relationships with the school district, and delivered professional development every month. During her first year at Harriet Tubman Charter School, Alexia served as the Dean of Special Education for grades 3-8. This is her second year in the role of Director of Special Education at Harriet Tubman Charter School for grades 3-8.
